Reality of North Korean defector(From the drama "Squid game")

You must be familiar with the “squid game”, a Korean drama that was a huge hit on Netflix recently. Even if you didn't watch the squid game, it was so popular that you've probably heard of the squid game at least once from the media. Korean Drama Squid Game is a survival game based on traditional Korean game called "squid game". 456 participants participate in the game and the goal is to survive until one final winner remains. It is interesting to show the dark side and absurdity of Korean society throughout the scope of each character who participated in the game.

All the roles of the characters in the drama Squid Game were well set in harmony, and the background of the characters in the show could be seen in reality easily, but among them, the character that stood out the most were North Korean defectors, Kang Sae-byeok. She looked strong and cold as a female warrior character, but in fact, she was more loyal and warm-hearted than anyone else. In order to bring her mother to South Korea, she had to steal and commit crime to pay the piper for her mom. And like other characters, the life of North Korean defector Kang Sae-byeok, who chose to participate in the game even though she knew it was risking her own life, faced the brutal reality.

There are many North Korean defectors in South Korea who are in the same situation as Kang Sae-byeok. They miss their family in North Korea, and they send over the money that they saved up. It costs them tens of millions of won to bring their family over to South Korea. Because of this reality, North Korean defectors do not hesitate to do hard chores(labor) to make money. The squid game director seems to have shown the reality of North Korean defectors well in the drama.

Dealing with the stories of North Korean defectors through dramas suggests various things. It also means that more people will have more opportunities to understand the lives of North Korean refugees and empathize with their suffering.

The life of North Korean defector Kang Sae-byeok, shown in the squid game, is not just a character that can only be seen in dramas, but a dramatic expression of people in reality. I hope the day will come when North Korean defectors, who are still living difficult lives, can live a little less difficult and a little less lonely.
